To develop the mana and standing of the Rainbow Community and enhance the cultural richness of Auckland, and Aotearoa at large.
To facilitate New Zealand’s pre-eminent festival for the Rainbow Community to celebrate our culture, sexual orientation and gender identity.
During 2011, a series of public meetings was held within Auckland’s Rainbow Community (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Takatāpui, Fa’afafine, Intersex, Queer) to assess the community’s desire to develop an annual Gay Pride Festival.
This process of consultation and development received broad political support from both local and national leaders. All expressed a commitment to ensure that Auckland’s Rainbow Community thrives and is actively supported and recognised for the strengths, diversity and colour that it brings to New Zealand’s Super City.
With solid community and political support onboard, an organising committee was established to seek funding from ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development) and Auckland Council for an inaugural two-week Auckland Pride Festival and Parade.
In June 2012, the funding was confirmed to coordinate and promote a full festival with flagship events aimed at local, national and international Rainbow Communities, as well as the residents of greater Auckland. ATEED’s sponsorship aligns with Auckland’s Major Events Strategy, delivering both social and economic benefits to the city.
ATEED has since re-confirmed its vital endorsement and sponsorship support of the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade through to 2016.
Auckland Pride Festival Incorporated was established to operate as a not-for-profit governance body, recruiting a Board of seven community members with experience in business management, event management, public relations, marketing, sponsorship, legal, financial management, and community relationships.
The Board oversees the various aspects of mounting the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade, including the appointment of key Festival and Parade Directors to deliver the Auckland Pride Festival and its signature events in 2015.
The Board and its representatives will work with New Zealand’s Rainbow Community, key stakeholders, sponsors and supporters to ensure that the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade 2015 builds on its previous successes to become a must-attend, destination event for local communities and visitors from around New Zealand and the world.
